EDEP Advanced Islamic Studies Summer School
Since 2015, EDEP’s summer intensive has been uniting students of sacred knowledge with some of the most eminent scholars of our time. Directly adjacent to the Hırka-i Şerif Mosque housing the cloak (hırka) of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, the intensive is hosted at EDEP Fatih’s historic building where the guardians of the cloak once lived.
Previous programs offered advanced level seminars in the fields of Logic, Kalām, Ḥadīth, Fiqh, Uṣūl al-fiqh and Sufism, as well as topical seminars such as Ottoman political thought, Islamic education, and contemporary problems in theology. Past teachers have included Dr. Recep Şentürk, Prof. Dr. Bilal Aybakan, Dr. Murteza Bedir, Dr. Ahmad Snobar, Dr. Mahmud al-Misri, Dr. Amjad Rasheed, Dr. Hamza Bekri, Sh. Maşuk Yamaç, Sh. Talha Hakan Alp, and Sh. Salih al-Ghursi have taught and lectured at previous programs. While courses are taught exclusively in classical Arabic and focused on classical texts, they are also enriched by the integration of discussion-based seminars on contemporary topics.
Participants in the summer intensive have come from all over the world to attend the program, including the United States, Canada, England, Germany, Jordan and Turkey. Courses are held five days a week, and on the weekends, optional cultural and historical excursions are organized to enhance the participants familiarity with Turkish history and culture. Some of the previous sites visited include İSAM (Center for Islamic Studies), Valide-i Atik Medrese, and Özbekler Tekke.
The 2017 Intensive is a four week program, beginning July 31st and ending August 25th. We invite students who are fluent in Arabic and have studied the Islamic studies in an Arabic environment to an “intermediate” level to apply.
Applications must be submitted online and are due by May 10, 2017, although students are urged to apply as soon as possible as decisions will be made on a rolling basis.
